Real Name: Gilbert Clarke
Birth town: Cleveland, Ohio, USA
Gilby Clarke joined Guns N' Roses as rhythm guitarist in 1991 after
the departure of founder member Izzy Stradlin'. He had previously played with LA band
Candy and then Kill For Thrills. Gilby says, "I knew it was
working but I didn't really think it was gonna happen. It didn't sink in until the first
show...I had known Matt Sorum for quite a long time. Duff and Slash I hadn't really known,
but I'd run into them over the years. It was comfortable to go down with at least Matt on
my side. But this is what I'd been dreaming about all those years. To get thrown into it
was like an unbelievable pay-off after 10 years of playing."
Clarke played on the "Use Your Illusion World Tour" throughout the remainder of
1991, 1992 and into 1993. Izzy briefly rejoined in 1993 when Gilby fell ill but it was not
a full fledged reunion. Gilby also played on 1993's "The Spaghetti Incident?",
an album of cover versions. In the extended Guns N' Roses absence he has released three
solo albums ("Pawnshop Guitars" in 1994, "The Hangover" in 1997 and
"Rubber" in 1998) and also appeared on Slash's 1995 Snakepit record. Gilby
Clarke was fired from Guns N' Roses after making some outspoken comments about Axl Rose in
the press. His replacement is longtime friend of Axl's, Paul Huge.
